Rooted in Scottish tradition, the Balmacaan began life as a robust country overcoat - a heavier‑weight garment designed for warmth, protection, and freedom of movement on the Balmacaan Estate near Inverness. Its loose A‑line cut, raglan sleeves, and high Prussian collar created a practical silhouette that layered comfortably over knitwear and tailoring, making it as functional outdoors as it was refined in town.

 

Today, Johnstons of Elgin reinterprets the Balmacaan in lambswool with a traditional Scottish wool handle, woven in our Elgin mill for warmth, durability, and a natural drape.
