Merino wool is prized for its fine fibres, natural softness and versatility. Naturally breathable and effective at regulating temperature, it offers warmth while remaining lightweight and comfortable against the skin.
Its natural properties mean merino wool does not require frequent washing. With a little care, merino knitwear can retain its softness, shape and performance for many years.
1. AIR BETWEEN WEARS
One of the simplest ways to care for merino wool is to allow it to breathe. Merino fibres naturally manage moisture and help regulate temperature, meaning garments can often be refreshed simply by airing them after wear.
Hang suitable garments in a well-ventilated space for a short time before folding them away. This helps release everyday odours and reduces the need for frequent washing.
2. HAND WASH WITH CARE
Hand wash your merino knitwear using lukewarm water and a small amount of specialist wool detergent. Always check the garment's care label for any specific care requirements before hand washing.
Gently submerge the garment and allow it to soak briefly. Move it carefully through the water without rubbing, twisting or stretching. Rinse thoroughly using clean water at a similar temperature.
Avoid biological detergents, fabric conditioners and bleach, as these can affect the natural qualities of wool fibres.
3. RESHAPE & DRY FLAT
After washing, gently press out excess water without wringing the garment. Lay it flat on a clean towel and carefully reshape it while damp.
Allow it to dry naturally, away from direct sunlight and artificial heat. Never tumble dry merino wool.
4. REMOVE PILLING
Merino wool's fine fibres can occasionally develop small pills through friction, particularly in areas such as the underarms and sides of a garment.
This is a natural characteristic of knitted wool and does not necessarily indicate poor quality. If pilling occurs, use a suitable wool comb and work gently over the affected area. Avoid pulling individual fibres or using excessive pressure.

5. STORE WITH CARE
MAINTAINING SHAPE
Fold merino knitwear rather than hanging it, particularly when storing heavier garments. This helps prevent stretching and maintains the original shape.
PROTECTING AGAINST MOTHS
Always store merino wool clean and completely dry. Choose a cool, dry storage space and use breathable bags or drawers to protect garments between seasons.
Cedar wood and lavender sachets can help deter moths. Check garments periodically, especially during warmer months.
6. KEEPING MERINO AT ITS BEST
Merino wool is naturally resilient, but gentle care helps preserve its qualities over time. Air garments between wears, hand wash only when necessary and always follow the care instructions provided.
With the right approach, merino knitwear will continue to offer the comfort, breathability and natural performance that make this fibre so valued.
