Caring for Lambswool

Lambswool is valued for its natural softness, warmth and resilience. Its fibres have a gentle elasticity that helps garments retain their shape, while their natural structure provides warmth without unnecessary weight.

With considered care, lambswool knitwear can be enjoyed for many years. Our guide explains how to hand wash, dry and store your lambswool pieces to help preserve their natural character.

1. REMOVE PILLING

Pilling is a natural characteristic of wool. During the first few wears, small loose fibres can work their way to the surface and form tiny bobbles, particularly in areas exposed to friction.

Use a wool comb or suitable knitwear comb to gently remove any pilling. Work carefully in one direction, taking care not to pull or catch the fibres. Avoid using a fabric shaver unless it is specifically suitable for the garment.

2. HAND WASH WITH CARE

Hand wash your lambswool knitwear using lukewarm water and a small amount of specialist wool detergent. Always check the garment's care label for any specific care requirements before hand washing.

Submerge the garment and gently move it through the water, allowing it to soak briefly. Avoid rubbing, twisting or stretching the fabric. Rinse carefully using clean water at a similar temperature to avoid sudden changes that may affect the fibres.

3. RESHAPE & DRY FLAT

After washing, gently press out excess water without wringing the garment. Lay it flat on a clean, dry towel and carefully reshape it to its original dimensions.

Allow the garment to dry naturally, away from direct sunlight, radiators and other sources of heat. Never tumble dry lambswool knitwear, as heat and movement can cause shrinkage and distortion.

4. REFRESH BETWEEN WASHES

Wool is naturally breathable and does not need frequent washing. Allowing your garment to rest between wears can help maintain its freshness and reduce unnecessary cleaning.

Air your lambswool knitwear in a well-ventilated space after wearing. For light marks, gently dab the affected area with a clean, slightly damp cloth, avoiding excessive rubbing.

5. STORE WITH CARE

KEEPING ITS SHAPE

Always fold lambswool knitwear rather than hanging it. Hanging can cause the natural weight of the garment to stretch the shoulders and alter its shape over time.

PREVENTING MOTHS

Before storing for the season, make sure your garment is clean and completely dry. Store it in a cool, dry place, ideally in a breathable storage bag or drawer.

Cedar wood and lavender sachets can help deter moths. Check stored knitwear periodically, particularly during warmer months.

6. LOOKING AFTER YOUR LAMBSWOOL

Small acts of care can make a lasting difference. Removing pilling when needed, hand washing only when necessary and storing garments correctly will help preserve the natural softness, warmth and shape of lambswool.

For garments with specialist finishes or care requirements, we recommend following the instructions on the care label and seeking professional advice where necessary.
